Ohio School Bans Afros and Braids!

"Afro-puffs and small twisted braids, with or without rubberbands, are NOT permitted." is the line included to the letter to parents regulating the hairstyles allowed in Lorain Horizon Science Academy School in Ohio.

Of ALL the problems in the world and in the school system, the administration at Lorain Horizon Science Academy concern is the hairstyles of students?

I remember watching the movie "Matilda" when Ms. Trunchable (the principal) said pig tails weren't permitted in her school, and thinking, you are merely a principal why would care about some pig tails? How ironic that all these years later, that thought applies to a real life situation.

This is more than administrators being concerned with hairstyles, its a matter of heritage and culture. Natural styles, protective styles, and styles of that sort are historically ethnically based. That's like telling the students of the Muslim community they are not permitted to wear their religious garments.

They say, and I quote, "hair must look natural, clean, well groomed, and should not cover the face- may be asked to cut if administration deems necessary(boys only)" and then in the VERY NEXT LINE, "Afro-puffs and small twisted braids, with or without rubber bands are not permitted."
How, in one line do you require hair to look natural but in the next line demand that Afro puffs and braids are not permitted ? The very essence of bein natural they are banning. Seems a little weird.

Anyways, what are your opinions on this ban of afros and braids in this Ohio school?

Below are some pics of the letters from the school to parents.
